Rick Johnson
If there’s anybody who’s been at Dave Genz’s side since the early days of the ice revolution, it’s Rick Johnson.
A talented and versatile winter fisherman, Johnson fishes hard, on an almost-daily basis, throughout the winter. He has traveled widely, fishing through the ice from Saskatchewan to Vermont, on waters ranging from Iowa farm ponds to the Great Lakes. Name the species and Rick knows how to catch it.
Johnson has also been instrumental in developing prototypes of modern ice fishing shelters and accessories. He built the first elevated racks for Fish Traps, which are becoming more common on snowmobiles and ATVs.
Despite all his expertise, do not expect complicated instructions from Rick Johnson. His approach is to simplify the sport, so anyone can understand it.
A truly great angler, Rick’s insights are a big part of the Ice Team program.

Plastics in Ice Fishing

Many ice anglers of today understand that winter’s fish live in water at its clearest. In such conditions, fish tend to locate and choose prey based on visual evidence. That might sound like mumbo-jumbo, but it means that what your bait looks like is more important under the ice than at any other time of year.
It also helps explain why plastics are coming on so strong in ice fishing.
Your Best Ice Season

To help you get off to a good start, here are a few key things you can do.
They’re all important, and in no particular order.
